Wat Phnom

Wat Phnom, the namesake and symbol of the capital city of Phnom Penh, sets prominently atop an artificial 27 meter hill (or 'Phnom') in the northeastern section of the city. Legend has it that Daun Penh, a wealthy widow, retrieved a large koki tree trunk from the river. She had hoped to use it for a house, but inside a hollow of the trunk, she found four statues of The Buddha. The area became a holy shrine because of this discovery, and tourists from around the world take time to visit this site and experience the story for themselves.

Wat Ouknalom

Wat Ounalom Phnom Penh is reputedly the oldest of the five pagodas that have been founded during Phnom Penh’s first era as a capital in the early 15th century. Today the Wat is also home to the Buddhist patriarch. This is the headquarters of the Cambodian Buddhist patriarchate, founded in 1443, comprising of 44 structures in total. The head of the country's Buddhist brotherhood lives here as do some monks. Here you can also see the statue of Samdech Huot Tat, fourth patriarch of Cambodian Buddhism, who was killed by Pol Pot. Behind the main building is a stupa containing an eyebrow hair of The Buddha.
The Royal Palace

The Royal Palace built in 1866, is one of Phnom Penh's most splendid architectural achievements and contains some spectacular buildings. Like the Throne Hall with its 59-meter tower covered with golden tiles. The Palace also includes a beautiful garden and is close to the riverside, making it a perfect place getting to know the local history and a stroll.

Institute of Foreign Languages

For those with a keen eye for architecture, we urge you to drop by The Institute of Foreign Languages Faculty. Designed by The Cambodian-born Beaux-arts-educated Vann Molyvann in 1956 in New Khmer style. The complex has striking concrete shapes and bears much resemblance to Brutalism. Do not forget to bring your camera.
