Gulangyu Island, Xiamen

Gulangyu Island is a small and tranquil island in Xiamen. It is also a pedestrian island where no vehicles are allowed. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2017, Gulangyu has a rich history to explore – with roots in Minnan fishing culture and the influx of colonial establishments who shaped the island’s architectural landscape by building consulates, churches, hospitals, schools and police stations. This explains the predominantly Victorian-era style architecture that can still be seen throughout Gulangyu. There are also thousands of well-preserved 19th century municipal buildings, grand houses and mansions of former consulates of different countries located across the island, a real treat for travelers with an interest in cultural history.

Sate soup is originally from Southeast Asia, which is close by to Xiamen. Every restaurant serving this dish has its own recipe and secret spices! Sate soup evolved gradually to become a Xiamen local noodle dish. Yuehua is one of the best sate noodles restaurants in the city, and has been for over 30 years. The owner, grandma Yuehua is over 80 years old, but she insists to ensure quality control daily by herself. The sate flavor is rich but not thick, and you can choose toppings such as fish balls, pork slices and vegetables.

Fu Gong

Fu Gong is located in Shangri-la Hotel, Xiamen. It is a characteristic Chinese fine dining restaurant. The restaurant's name comes from the port of Fujian, and the décor of ornamental shipping items was brought to the restaurant to create an environment harking back to the history of that port. The chefs here are mostly from Hong Kong and Guangdong, so it’s featured cuisines are Cantonese and Minnan. Siu Mei (roasted meats) are the specialty, especially juicy roast duck with crispy skin. During lunch time, they also offer a Dim Sum buffet. Xiamen is an island city, so you have to taste the most fresh local seafood when you visit.
