Hiding in an alley in an old residential area, Yayuan is a local favorite restaurant serving bites to go. Since its opening in 1985, it has always been on the ‘must-see’ list in Guangzhou. Their signature dish, fried yellow croaker with sweet soy sauce and garlic is absolutely incredible. The whole fish tastes crispy on the outside, but the inside flesh is super fresh and tender. Don’t let the simple, unadorned shop front put you off! This place is one of the best in the city.

Baihua Dessert Store is in a quaint old neighbourhood and has been serving locals there for over thirty years. The store menu is little bit overwhelming, as it offers over 100 desserts, partly because each type of sweet soup has many different toppings. One of the signature desserts is the phoenix golden milk paste that is made of milk and egg yolk. It melts in your mouth immediately with delicious sweetness. Sitting in the store, listening to the neighbours chatting, eating a bowl of sweet soup, it is a good way to feel typical Guangzhou local life.

Hope and Sesame

Hope and Sesame is the first Speakeasy bar in Guangzhou. It was voted one of Asia’s 50 Best Bars in 2019. From its outside appearance, it is an old bing sutt store (bing sutt is the traditional cold drinking house, but serves western snacks as well). Through the small hall, pull the back door open and the intoxicating light comes into sight. Inside the bar, modern interior design and wide selection of wines are a sharp contrast to the outside. Every cocktail here is lovingly made to order by the bartenders.
