Designer's Note
“The new % Arabica Roastery is situated in the heart of Shanghai, a city renowned for its striking contrasts and vibrant energy. Nestled in the historic Rockbund area, known for its rich art deco heritage and dynamic blend of modern and traditional Chinese elements, this project presented a unique opportunity to create a space that reflects the eclectic spirit of the city.
The roasting area is positioned at the corner of the building and fully visible from the street, directly on the left upon entry. The prominent placement of the Probat machine led us to make the roasting space a central feature. The fully glazed area, with seating arranged against the glass and wooden partition, allows everyone to observe the coffee roasting process.
From the main street, two inviting entrances with outdoor seating lead customers inside, where a sleek bar introduces them to the world of coffee roasting. The glossy white ceramic finish adds elegance and highlights the brand’s distinct identity.
Central to the design is the decision to preserve the raw shell of the building, showcasing its original structure to highlight the woody and sharp aesthetics that resonate with the refined Arabica style.
The existing terrazzo floor has been meticulously refurbished, and the large concrete pillars have been sanded to reveal their original textures. Preserving these elements creates a harmonious balance between the old and the new, enhancing the venue’s unique character.
Against the existing columns, we developed custom wall-mounted Chemex lights with double brass discs in the Art Deco style, inspired by Kenneth Shoji’s challenge to reinterpret the Chemex coffee maker.”
